Woohoo! Another new year is on it’s way! Wh
y do we get so excited for each new year? Well, for the majority of us, the New Year is a time when we get to start off brand spanking new and wipe the slate clean. It’s a time when many of us start our lists of goals or resolutions of what we are going to do to make this coming year bigger and better than the last.
I went researching into the idea of resolutions and goals for 2008, what people really want and some strategies on how to really attain what they want. . And just like I suspected, having more money in the bank is always on the top of the list.
According to mygoals.com, “In 2008, we expect people to focus a lot of time and energy improving their careers and getting out of debt,” said Greg Helmstetter, CEO of myGoals.com. Two of the top three most popular resolutions will involve starting businesses and becoming debt-free.”
In fact, mygoals.com found that Entrepreneurship jumped from 20% to 30% of Career-related goals, surpassing those related to new jobs and promotions.
According to RISMEDIA, Dec. 20, 2007- “FranklinCovey released the results of its third annual New Year’s Resolutions Survey, which polled 15,031 customers. The survey found that respondents’ top three New Year’s resolutions or goals for 2008 are to (1) get out of debt or save money, (2) lose weight, and (3) develop a healthy habit like exercise or healthy eating.”
The Top 10 New Year’s resolutions or goals were ranked as follows:
1. Get out of debt or save money
2. Lose weight
3. Develop a healthy habit (e.g., exercise or healthy eating)
4. Get organized
5. Develop a new skill or talent
6. Spend more time with family and friends
7. Other
8. Work less, play more
9. Break an unhealthy habit (e.g., smoking, alcohol, overeating)
10. Change employment
Whoa, did you catch that first one? “Get out of debt or save money!”
Now, the downside to this is the majority of people fail to reach those resolutions and in fact drop them after only a few months. So, this is where we need to take a step back before 2008 begins and think about how we can actually accomplish our resolutions this year and actually make it a banner year for us all.
Since I have been schooled by our mentor that goal setting doesn’t work for the average person because they don’t take them seriously, one way I think about what I want to attain is to look at goals as expectations of having it done before I even start.
Turn your resolutions into habits. Work on your new business everyday to make it a habit, write down everything you eat on a daily basis. Either way, chipping away at something on a daily basis can turn it into a habit you do automatically and before you know it you’ve accomplished what you have set out to do without even thinking about it! It can turn what seemed like an overwhelmingly large task into a small one.
Don’t get overwhelmed. How many goals do you have on your list? 2? 5? 10? Just write down 1 to 3 things of changes you want to make in your life this year. It will help you keep focused and you won’t have a failure to launch before you even start.
Make a plan. Make a plan of how you are actually going to accomplish those changes in your life. It doesn’t matter if you write them down in a notebook or record the plan on your mp3 player as long as you have some sort of map on how to accomplish your goal.
Visualize. Mindset is everything. If you can picture yourself with money already in the bank or yourself in that hot red bikini on the beaches of Florida, it will take you half way there.
These are a few suggestions to get you on your way to a successful 2008. I have included some blog posts about resolution that include some great advice to further help you accomplish your goals. Together, we can make this an incredible year!
Cheers! Kelly
