Did you know that Happy people live 8 or 9 years longer than people who are not?
And Happy people tend to get fewer colds?
No kidding. Positive psychologists are actually doing studies on Happiness, what it can do for you and how to equip people with Happiness skills.
I was watching a program tonight on how to be happy. A positive psychologist took 4 participants to teach them how to be happy. Psychologists explain that being happy doesn’t mean being in a constant state of euphoria but feeling positive about your life most of the time. The participants took a written happiness test and then carried out a series of tests or tasks – the first was to do something hedonistic or selfish, the next task was an altruistic task, and lastly was about being grateful and telling an important person in their life how grateful they are for having them in their lives.
After they carried these tasks out their happiness levels increased which were attributed to the awareness of their lives around them. Is that all it takes for us to be happy? To remind ourselves of what we do have on a daily basis? Many of us have watched The Secret, read the book or something similar and but yet not carrying out the actions that will bring you true happiness.
Try these experiments yourself. Do something for yourself only, something hedonistic like a massage or taking skydiving. Then do something totally altruistic for someone else – volunteer at a soup kitchen or be a big sister to a child in need and then lastly tell that important person in your life what an impact they have made and how grateful you are for them being there or the incredible influence they have had on you.
It makes sense why even when I get in a frustrated mood when things are not going right, it doesn’t take long for me to get back up again, because I remember what I have. Brad and I call each other on it daily, sometimes just taking a time out just like our children do helps, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Remind yourself everyday what incredible people and advantages you have in your life.
One of my favorite times of the day is right before bed with my children when we have quiet time together reading and talking about the day. It reminds me of how fortunate I am to have these precious miracles in my life. Okay, before I start choking up, I better get to bed.
Cheers, smile and be happy.
