Wahm’s Screw Up
You know, when I was checking out this 14 year old’s blog site it really hit home to me that besides the fact technology is second nature to the younger generation and they blow Web 2.0 out of the water, they also don’t have that paralyzing Fear of Failure. They aren’t afraid to screw up or fail. When they do, they just pick themselves back up and do it again until they get it right.
We can learn so much by watching our children how to handle mistakes and rejection. It doesn’t deter them in the least. Have you ever said no to a child who is staring at pictures of toys he so dearly wants and asks you if he will get them for Christmas or his birthday or even just for good behavior?
My 3 1/2 year old son for instance is in love with the Thomas the Tank Engine series and stares at his Thomas catalog everyday, has me and anyone within 3-feet stare at it, telling them which ones he wants. He tells me everyday he wants a certain piece when I tell him he has to wait, he comes back again about 10 minutes later to say the same thing.
Something mystical must happen to the majority of people from then until adulthood, because when I work with people they give up after one rejection or one screw up on an advertisement or a press release. OMG! How did we become so paralyzed within this invisible wall of fear? We would have never accomplished even the simplest tasks in life if we gave up that easily including walking or playing ball.
I remember reading one Jack Humphrey’s emails and he was quoting someone by saying, “We pass failure on the way to success,” and it’s so true. For each success in life I have achieved no matter how great or small there was always a hurtle I had to get over first. Most of the times once we reach those successes we suddenly forget every little bump along the way until someone reminisces. Believe me, there are plenty of mistakes I have made when I felt like crawling under a rock and changing my name and address. (I once did a 3-way call, clicked back and didn’t know I wasn’t hung up and unknowingly left a rant on the gentleman’s voicemail until I heard the ‘beeeep!” I was mortified to say the least. I didn’t say anything derogatory but still mortified.)
Let’s face it, you’re going to screw up sometimes. Get over it, get through it, accept it, embrace it, learn from it because it’s unavoidable. Any successful person will tell you that over and over again, that’s one thing every success story has in common, failure.
Cheers to all of your successes! Kelly
